Best group of ten Simbra females in South Africa 2013

Breedplan hosts an annual “Best group of ten females” award per participating breeds. The winners are determined per breed based on the fertility history and EBV’s. Seven of the qualifying cows must have calved four times and the quality of the calves is also considered. The following cows were included in the Delft group of cows.

More than fifty percent of the calves from this group were registered. Many saleable bulls were bred by these cows and many heifers have been retained and are following in the footsteps of their dams.  The older cows have also been awarded many star awards.

At Delft we also score our cattle in terms of structural correctness and type. It is interesting that all these cows were scored a seven or eight from a possible nine.

One of ASM017A’s (a three star cow) daughters also qualified for inclusion is this group of outstanding cows. DTM044A bred two stud sires and some of her daughters were retained in our stud. DTM0766A bred two stud sires of which one is being used in our stud this season. Renegade DTM09167C, reserve junior champion at Parys, and the signatory stud bull of Delft Simbra is also in this elite group of cows, MZ0629B Marnel Olga.

An interesting observation is the fact that seven of the females were half crosses and one a F1-cum animal. DO not jump to any conclusion. This is attributable to the fact that these cows come from a time where our herd mostly consisted of half crosses and F1-cum animals. In the next couple of years this group will be complimented by many F3 and SP animals as well. We also need to remember that cows older than six years, retained in a stud, will always be outstanding animals.

Delft had five champions at the national show in 2012. Junior female champion, reserve senior, reserve junior and reserve calf bulls. Our reserve senior bull was also the reserve breed champion.

We are however equally proud of this performance by our senior ladies and wish to thank Breedplan, the sponsor, for the honour bestowed upon us.

Breedplan adds immense value to our herd and is largely responsible for these achievements. Without their commitment to animal science we will be flying blind.
