A new South African record for a Simbra Bull.

FM0945C a Prevail son was bought by Delft, Tobonama and Hendazee Simbra Stud at a record price of R350 000.

Why would breeders pay such a price for this bull or, for that matter, for any other bull? Does it make any economical sense and what will the return on such an investment be?

Let us first discuss this bull named “Kolskoot” by its current owners. This bull has the following positive attributes that makes him something special:

  • The bull is structurally sound and produces quality semen. The bull walks well with good hooves and pigmentation. He carries beef, is broad and well balanced. Kolskoot also has good temperament with a slight cheekiness about him.

  • This bull is a Prevail son. Prevail is a proven stud sire from America. This sire has already made his mark in South Africa and his progeny has sold at above average prices.

  • His dam is a Belle More Jared daughter. Jared is one of the top Simbra herd sires in South Africa with progeny present in each and every Simbra stud in South Africa.

  • The fact that that this bull is polled ads value. Stud sires which are red and with a blaze are also sought after in South Africa. This bull seems to have it all.

Simbra Stud breeders are committed to performance testing and rely on accurate EBV’s and Selection Index Values to assist in the purchase of performance tested genetics. This bull current Selection Index Values are outstanding. The progeny of this bull will improve the accuracy of these values. They may change slightly but not materially.  All the above aspects mentioned about this bull is supported by his Selection Index Values and contributed materially to the premium paid for this bull.

Selection Index Values (Rand)

Market Target  Index Value  Breed Average
Self Replacing Feedlot Index  +250  +124
Namibian Grass Fed Index  +144  +68
Self Replacing Weaner Index  +209  +88

As far as the economic sense is concerned it follows that a bull at this price must add economic value to its owner. Kolskoot has already, and will in future, add value to justify the investment made as follows:

  • The mere fact that a bull is purchased at a record price creates immense publicity for the owner and the breed. It is much talked about and most leading agricultural publications will carry a story on such an event. This bull has hence created an awareness of himself and its owners.

  • The bloodline of this bull has been established and proven on both the dam and sire side. Many breeders will want to buy, and have already bought, semen from this bull. In time to come breeders will pay premiums for progeny from this bull. Other bulls, such as Pax, Jared and Fanie have already established this trend.

  • The true fact is that semen sales alone will pay for the investment and the more than 100 calves born from this bull next year will be the first reward on the investment made in this bull.

  • If he breeds well he will impact hugely on the Simbra breed. He will add value, not only to his owners but also to those breeders that invest in his progeny and to the breed as a whole.

Performances testing over time will ultimately determine his rand value.
